***Please be aware that I am only listing things that I do that work for me and for the puppy while in my possession. These are only tips / suggestions on how to care for a new puppy.

Caring for a teacup puppy.

  1. Do not let the puppy be without food and water at anytime. Teacups require more food and water than an average sized puppy.

  2. Do not let the puppy over exert herself/himself. Limit play time to around 30 minutes. You don't want the puppy to be so tired that all he/she wants to do is sleep.

  3. Do not over pamper. They will get so spoiled that you could end up with a puppy that has separation anxiety issues and stresses all the time (bad situation).

  4. I recommend using a exercise play pen (purchase from any pet store such at PetSmart or PetCo) instead of a crate for house training a teacup, due to the fact that they are so small they can't hold their bladder and bowels for a very long period of time yet.

  5. Do not carry the puppy around all the time, as they can become sore quickly and too much carrying can make them start stressing. Allow the puppy to run and play while you are there to supervise.

  6. Do not take any puppy that has not received all it's necessary vaccinations into a pet supply store or any public place as they can pick up viruses, diseases and other bad stuff from those places. It is good to wait until the puppy is at least 16 weeks old before exposing them to those places.

  7. Do not let strange people touch and/or hold the puppy until he/she has received all vaccinations. Again, it's best if the puppy is at least 16 weeks before exposing to those situations.

Food:

I use and highly recommend PURINA PRO PLAN SELECT (Turkey and Barley) puppy formula (purchase at PetSmart, PetCo or similar pet supply place). Never restrict a teacup puppy from his/her food or water. Teacups can go into sugar or calcium drops very quickly. This is why food and water must be accessible for the puppy anytime.

You can also use plain non-fat yogurt if the puppy starts to act as if he/she is getting a belly ache or just as a sometime supplement for calcium. Yogurt is also good to use when the puppy is getting used to it's new environment / new home/ new family.

Vitamins:

I use Mega-Cal (for weight gain), Carn-A-Plex vitamins (for increasing appetite / contain L-Carnitine). Also, keep a tube of Nutri-Cal (for sugar drops) on hand at all times.

Bathing:

Do not bath any puppy more than once in a 7 to 10 day span. Excessive bathing can cause skin problems and dry, itchy skin. You can use a waterless spray for freshening up the puppy in between regular bathing. Grooming colognes is also good to use in between bathes.
